The Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and breathtaking trails, known for its stunning scenery and excellent acclimatization profile. Often called the “Whiskey Route” for its adventurous nature, it takes you through lush rainforest, dramatic ridges, alpine deserts, and the iconic Barranco Wall. Suitable for both seasoned hikers and determined first-timers, Machame offers a balanced challenge with high summit success rates on both the 6-day and 7-day itineraries.
Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp
• Start at Machame Gate and trek through dense rainforest filled with birds and wildlife.
Gradual ascent to Machame Camp. -
Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp
• Climb past tall heathers and moorland to the Shira Plateau. Stunning views of Kibo Peak.

Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
• Climb high, sleep low” day. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), then descend to Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
• A thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a gentle trek to Karanga Valley and Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
• Short but steep hike to Barafu, your base for the summit. Early dinner and rest before midnight push.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
• Midnight summit attempt via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 7 (Optional): Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
• If keeping it as a 6-day itinerary, this descent is counted within Day 6. Otherwise, it becomes Day 7.

The newest and longest route, circling around the northern slopes for maximum acclimatization. Remote, less crowded, and offering panoramic views—it boasts the highest summit success rate.
