Northern Circuit (Morum Route) 6 to 8 Days
Northern Circuit (Morum Route) — 6 to 8 Days
Descriptions
The Northern Circuit, often accessed via the Morum (Moru/Morum Hill) approach, is one of Kilimanjaro’s newest and most beautiful routes. It offers the longest and best acclimatization profile, circling around the mountain’s remote northern slopes — far away from crowds. With expansive views toward Kenya and peaceful wilderness camps, it has one of the highest summit success rates.
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Morum Camp → Shira 1 Camp
• Walk across the vast, open Shira Plateau with incredible views of Kibo’s western face. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,505m), surrounded by volcanic formations and sweeping plains.
-
Day 2: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp
• A relaxed acclimatization trek across the caldera takes you to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m). This area offers some of the best sunset views on Kilimanjaro.
-
Day 3: Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Moir Hut
• Climb up toward the Lava Tower (4,630m) for high-altitude acclimatization before descending to the remote Moir Hut (4,200m). Stunning landscapes and dramatic cliffs surround this quiet camp.
-
Day 4: Moir Hut → Buffalo Camp (Northern Slopes)
• Leave the southern circuit and curve around to the northern side of the mountain, entering peaceful, uncrowded wilderness. Trek to Buffalo Camp (4,020m) with wide views toward Kenyan plains.
-
Day 5: Buffalo Camp → Third Cave Camp
• A gentle traverse across the northern circuit trail takes you to Third Cave Camp (3,900m). This is one of the quietest areas on the mountain — ideal for acclimatization. For 8-Day Route: Use this as an acclimatization day or add extra rest at Moir or Buffalo Camp.
-
Day 6: Third Cave → School Hut (Summit Base Camp)
• Continue the gradual ascent to School Hut (4,750m), the base for your summit attempt. Early dinner and a long rest to prepare for the midnight ascent.
-
Day 7: School Hut → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
• Begin the summit push before midnight, climbing steep slopes to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating, descend to Barafu (short rest), then to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight.
