Marangu Route 5 to 6 Days
Marangu Route — 5 to 6 Days
Descriptions
Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, the Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route offering hut accommodation, making it popular and comfortable for trekkers. It follows a direct, gradual ascent through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the iconic summit at Uhuru Peak. Suitable for beginners, though acclimatization can be more challenging due to its quicker ascent.
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
• Begin your trek at Marangu Gate (1,860m) with registration before entering lush montane rainforest. Walk through towering trees, waterfalls, and colobus monkeys until reaching Mandara Hut (2,700m). Option for a short walk to Maundi Crater for stunning views.
-
Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut
• The landscape transitions from rainforest to heath and moorland, offering expansive views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), a lively camp shared by ascending and descending climbers.
-
Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut (Optional – for 6-Day Route)
• A valuable acclimatization day with a hike toward Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi. This extra day increases summit success and reduces altitude-related challenges.
-
Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut
• The trail cuts across the Alpine Desert, dry and open with incredible panoramas. Reach Kibo Hut (4,703m) at the base of the summit ridge. Early dinner and rest as you prepare for the midnight summit push.
-
Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
• Start at midnight for the challenging climb up Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. After celebrations and photos, descend back to Kibo, take a short break, then continue to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
-
Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate
• A long but refreshing descent back through the moorland and rainforest until reaching Marangu Gate. Collect your certificate and celebrate completing the classic Marangu Route.
