The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side, close to the Kenyan border. It is quieter, scenic, and known for its gentle, gradual ascent, making it excellent for acclimatization. With fewer crowds, diverse landscapes, and a high success rate, Rongai is perfect for trekkers seeking a peaceful and rewarding climb.
Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate → Simba Camp
• Start at the Rongai Gate (1,950m) on Kilimanjaro’s northern slope. The trail climbs steadily through forest and farmland with chances of spotting colobus monkeys. Reach Simba Camp (2,600m) overlooking Kenya’s vast plains.

Day 2: Simba Camp → Second Cave Camp
• Continue ascending into moorland terrain with wide-open views. Arrive at Second Cave Camp (3,450m), a scenic area known for Mawenzi’s sharp, jagged peak dominating the skyline.

Day 3: Second Cave → Kikelelwa Camp
• A short but steep trek toward Kikelelwa Camp (3,630m). The environment becomes more rugged and dramatic. This quieter campsite offers stunning views and strong acclimatization benefits.

Day 4: Kikelelwa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Camp
• Climb to the magnificent Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), a stunning glacial lake beneath Mawenzi’s black volcanic spires. One of the most beautiful camps on the mountain and a great place to acclimatize.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut
• Cross the wide, barren Alpine Desert as you head toward Kibo Hut (4,703m). This is summit base camp. Early dinner and rest as you prepare for the midnight ascent.

Day 6: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
• Begin the summit push before midnight, climbing the steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,685m), then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating, descend back to Kibo, rest briefly, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night.

Day 7: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate
• Descend through moorland and rainforest to reach Marangu Gate (1,860m). Receive your summit certificate and enjoy a final celebration after completing the Rongai adventure.
